Ray Thornhill

Dargan Ray Thornhill, 83, husband of Miranda Eaddy Thornhill, died Monday, August 15, 2022 at MUSC, Florence.

Ray was born on December 23, 1938, in Florence County, son of the late J. P. Thornhill and Jettie Rue Lee Thornhill.  He was a veteran of the US Army serving in Vietnam.  Ray was a member of Johnsonville Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served as a Deacon for many years, and was a choir member.  He also was active in the men’s fellowship and was known for his barbecue and cakes. He was a mechanic and Lead Supervisor at Wellman Industries, retiring after 30 years.  He then was a bus driver for the Johnsonville School District and provided landscaping services for the community.  Ray enjoyed fishing, gardening and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. His greatest love was spending time with his family, whether it was watching his grandchildren playing baseball or softball or teaching them how to bake cakes or barbecue a hog.  His grandchildren and his great grandchild were his pride and joy.

Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Miranda E. Thornhill; sons, Christopher J. (Laura) Thornhill of Denver, NC and Darren R. (Susan) Thornhill of Johnsonville; grandchildren, Mikayla (Jake) Pope of Hemingway, Ethan Thornhill of Charlotte, NC and William Thornhill of Denver, NC; great granddaughter, Ellie Ray Pope; sister, Ella Mae (Allen) Brownlee of St George.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Judy, Joann and Jeanette; half-brother, Edward.

The family will receive friends 2:00 – 4:00 PM, Thursday, August 18, 2022 at Johnsonville Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Funeral services will be 4:00 PM, Thursday, August 18, 2022 at Johnsonville Pentecostal Holiness Church, Johnsonville with burial to follow at St John Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery, Pamplico.
