Jimmy Legrand Spring

Jimmy Legrand Spring, 80, of Scranton, passed away Monday, June 15, 2026, at McLeod Hospice in Florence, South Carolina. His last two days were spent surrounded by loved ones, praying, and singing hymns. 

“Big Jimmy” was born on September 8, 1945, in Florence, South Carolina, son of the late Dessie and Florrie Spring. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict. He worked as a lineman for Sumter Builders/Sumter Utilities for 45 years before retiring, spending most of his career as a foreman with an impeccable safety record. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Church of God of Prophecy, having recently re-dedicated his life to Jesus. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, raising hunting dogs and running them throughout the Pee Dee for decades. Most importantly, he was married to the love of his life for 58 years. He was an amazing, protective father to his children, he was a friend and confidant as a father-in-law, and he was an adoring, loving grandfather and great-grandfather.

Surviving are his wife, Betty “Clydia” Spring of Scranton; daughter, Dusty (Bryan) Braddock of Hartsville; sister, Peggy Johnson of Olanta; grandchildren, Regan (Caleb) Spring Matthews of Darlington, Caleb L. Spring of Columbia, Joseph “Jay” Braddock of Hartsville, and Andrew “Hampton” Braddock of Hartsville; great-grandchildren, Delilah Jo Matthews, Joseph “Joey” Dean Matthews, and Wilson Grey Spring as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Big Jimmy was preceded in death by his son, Jimmy L. Spring, II; grandparents, Brady and Lizzie Ridgle; parents, Dessie and Florrie Spring; sister, Jeanette Spring Barfield and brother-in-law, Reverend Raymond Barfield.

Big Jimmy’s memory will be cherished by his family and his vast circle of friends whom he loved very much.  His family has great comfort knowing that he was happily reunited in heaven with his beloved Lil Jimmy and so many others.

Visitation will take place at 2:00 PM followed by funeral services at 3:00 PM, Friday, June 19, 2026, at Pleasant Grove Church of God of Prophecy, with burial to follow at Bethel Baptist Cemetery.
